St Louis were delighted to welcome former Head Girl, Aoife McGrath, back to St Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel, to speak to the whole school recently about her upcoming humanitarian trip to Tanzania in Africa.

Aoife, a former pupil of Carrick Primary School Burren, St Louis, and currently studying Social Work in Queens University of Belfast, spoke with passion about her upcoming project in May 2024. She described how she will be going to join the Bosco for Africa team, and especially Fr John Kilcoyne of the SMA Fathers, Dromantine, in his work with the shunned albino communities in Tanzania. These projects involve helping this ostracised people to move out of poverty through small economy enterprises, as well as teaching the most vulnerable much-needed skills as they move into adult life.

Aoife was very appreciative of the presentation of a cheque for £300 towards her trip which will help her fundraising effort. This money was raised by the St Louis students from Year 8 to Year 14 in October 2023 when they held their annual Jersey Day. It was decided to donate some money to Aoife as well as to GOAL.

Furthermore, Aoife stayed behind to engage in a smaller Q&A session with St Louis senior pupils who are interested in pursuing a degree in Social Work or Social Policy. The pupils expressed their delight in having the chance to speak to a current student in this field about her experience to date. Mrs Devlin, Head of Careers, was also very appreciate of Aoife giving up her time to offer some very meaningful advice to the current senior cohort.
