In the summer of 2021, talented and high achieving students Ella Peters and Mark McVeigh were successful in attaining a STEM Research Placement co-ordinated through Sentinus NI. Ella and Mark spent 4 weeks working with researchers at Queen’s University, Belfast, and professionals within the world of business completing a research project and developing subject knowledge and higher skills in quantitative analysis. The students were supported in their application by Mrs Elaine Cahill (Head of Mathematics) and Mrs Julie Devlin (Head of Careers). Mark’s project focussed on the many ways mathematical formula can be derived and how mathematical formula direct our understanding of the world around us. His main focus of study was ‘finding PI in obscure places. Ella’s undertook a project comparing the biodiversity on farms and inform the environmental farming schemes required for improvement, a relevant piece of research given the climate and wildlife crisis being discussed at COP26 conference.

The NI celebration ceremony planned at the Whitla Hall at Queen’s could not take place this month due to the increased Covid risk and a small celebration was held in school to recognise the tremendous work completed by both students.

Mr Ciaran Lynch from Sentinus presented certificates to the students and applauded their their accomplishment remarking “both Mark and Ella showed great proactivity, enthusiasm, and talent and through their dedication and capacity for independent research produced academic reports that indicate readiness for the challenge of third level work” He emphasised that those students who attain a Sentinus Summer Research placement gain a valuable insight into university level work, have a great opportunity for networking with academics and employers, strengthen their career ambitions and enhance the quality of their UCAS personal statements and future CV’s.

Having enjoyed their selected 4-week research project, Ella and Mark encourage other students to grasp the opportunity and apply for a Sentinus Academy Summer placement in 2022. Applications are now open across Northern Ireland.

Paying tribute to Ella and Mark, St Louis principal, Mr Kevin Martin, described them as inspirational role models gifted with intellectual curiosity, a strong work ethic, and an enthusiasm for challenge and opportunity.
